According this year's reports (August 1999), there are 11,000 companies worldwide certified to ISO14000. We haven't seen numbers for 2002 - the RAB has become very secretive (they want to sell everything related to ISO14000, so if you have more recent data, email us! Of these, the majority are in
Last year's reports (Summer '98) , there were 4,045 companies certified around the world and 175 companies certified in North America.
You might not expect a modest-size metal-finishing company in Brighton, Michigan to be pioneering a new environmental path for its industry. However, March Coatings, Inc. is just announced its certification to the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
"We are the first metal-finishing company in North America to achieve ISO 14001," states Mr. Steve March, CEO, "and our position is somewhat unique, because this standard is not a requirement for us to do business with our customers. However, it is the way we want to do business, and how we want to run our operation."
Ford Motor Company's North Penn facility, near Lansdale in Montgomery County, has been certified under the international environmental standard ISO 14001. North Penn is the fifth (as of May 2, 1997) automotive facility in North America to achieve the standard. The other four also belong to Ford.
The ISO 14001 standard involves the use of a strict environmental management system and, like the related ISO 9001 quality standard, it requires that an organization monitor and continually improve its performance. The standard encompasses all of the environmental effects of a manufacturing site, including energy use, water treatment, waste disposal, noise and air quality. ISO 14001 certification is one step being
taken under a new Ford Environmental System that is designed to provide a globally consistent set of environmental management procedures, yet allow each local plant to identify its own environmental needs and objectives.
Ford is seeking global ISO 14001 certification as an independent means to measure the company's environmental performance.
For more information about the effort, contacts at Ford News (APO Public Affairs, Suite 920, 16800 Executive Plaza, Dearborn, MI 48126-6200) include Norm Johnson, 313 337-2890, and Karen Holtschneider, 202 962-5390.
