Many towns and cities offer curbside collection, even for Christmas trees. Counties and unicorporated areas typically have a number or drop-off locations.

Christmas trees are usually colllected from December 26th through the first 2 or 3 weeks in January.  Whether your tree is picked up from your curb,Grinding Christmas trees into mulch or you drop it off, be sure to remove all  remove all lights, wire, tinsel, ornaments, nails, stands,  other NON-Organic decorative materials and other materials that are not part of the original tree. This includes tree stands also.  Flocked trees are occasionally accepted (call to verify), but not artificial trees. Large trees (larger than the standard 6 - 7 ft tree) may need to be cut in half to be acceptable by your curbside garbage hauler.

The trees and wreathes are usually chipped and made into a mulch which is often made available, free to city or county residents.

Ohio: Where and How to Recycle Your Christmas Tree After the Holidays January 2024

  • Akron, OH - Leave your tree at the curb on regular trash days.
  • Butler County - See their website for the most current information. For City of Hamilton, Christmas Tree Collection , place discarded trees with your trash for removal by Rumpke with the regular trash pick-up.
    City of Hamilton: Residents may leave trees for trash pick up at the curb. For information call 867-8661. Butler County residents can also recycle their live Christmas trees using several community composting and chipping programs.

    City of Fairfield: Residents can recycle trees at the Waterworks Park at 5021 Groh Lane from December 26 through January 4. Look for the tree disposal corral. Residents may leave trees at the curb for trash pick up. For information call 867-5370.
    City of Oxford: January 5 - January 30, residents may leave trees at the curbside on regularly scheduled refuse collection days. For more information, call 523-8412. Trees are picked up by the City of Oxford and chipped for use as mulch.
    City of Middletown: Residents may leave trees at the curb with their household trash pick up by Rumpke. Middletown residents can call 513-988-6304 for more information.
    City of Monroe: Residents may leave trees at the curb with their household trash pick up by Rumpke. Monroe residents can call 513-727-8953 for more information. City of Trenton: Residents may leave trees at the curb with their household trash pick up by Rumpke. Trenton residents can call 513-988-6304 for more information.
    West Chester Township: Residents can drop off trees at Keehner Park (near the tennis courts) and at Beckett Park off of Union Centre Blvd. (soccer field area). from Dec 26 - Jan 31. Call 777-8765 for more information. Call 777-8765 for more information.
    Other Butler County disposal options and recycling options:
    Rumpke: During the first 2 weeks in January, Butler County Rumpke customers can leave trees at the curb for pick up with trash. Rumpke prefers trees to be in a disposable bag and if tree is longer than 6, cut tree in half. After the first 2 weeks in January, call Rumpke at 742-2900 to schedule a pick up.
    CSI/Republic Service: customers should call to schedule tree pick up collection and for pricing. Contact CSI/Republic Services at 771-4200.
    Tri-State Landscaping Supply: 2864 Cincinnati Dayton Road near Middletown/Monroe will accept trees at no charge for composting from Butler County residents. Call 513-423-8723 for more information.
  • Central Ohio - Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO)
    Christmas Tree Recycling Information: The Christmas trees you set out for pickup go to the Authority's sponsored compost facilities. They ask that you remove lights, tinsel, decorations, and the plastic or metal icicles and the large plastic tree bags. Plastic contaminates the compost process and ruins the finished product.
    NOTICE: Effective Jan. 1, 2023 yard waste generated for drop-off by Franklin County residents, including Christmas trees, will only be accepted free of charge at Ohio Mulch facilities (free yard waste drop-off for Franklin County residents For participating locations, please visit the Ohio Mulch website ). Previously, Franklin County residents could also take yard waste to Kurtz Bros. facilities free of charge. Due to contractual changes, Kurtz Bros. facilities may no longer accept residential yard waste (including Christmas trees) or may charge a fee for its acceptance. If a resident desires to take material to a Kurtz Bros. facility they are strongly encouraged to contact the facility directly prior to delivery to confirm acceptance and any applicable charges .
  • Cleveland, Ohio - Put Christmas Trees curb-side for pick-up on regular collection days.
    All decorations and lights should be removed.
  • Cleveland Heights, Ohio - The Christmas tree recycling program offers residents an easy and environmentally sensitive way to dispose of their live trees. To prepare the tree for collection and for the safety of our employees, all decorations, tinsel, wire, nails, stands and bags must be removed from the tree. Trees in plastic bags or flocked trees cannot be recycled. To find more information about Christmas tree recycling, please contact the Refuse and Recycling Department at 216-691-7300.
  • Columbus, OH - Christmas tree disposal is free and part of the city's yard-waste collection on scheduled yard-waste collection days through January. Trees should be placed curbside by 6 am. All decorations and lights should be removed. Trees larger than 8 feet should be cut in half. Do not put the tree in a plastic bag. For more information about yard-waste collection days, call 614-645-3111. Residents can check the yard-waste removal schedule by entering their address here . Residents are assigned to either Zone A or Zone B for each day of the week. During the week of an observed holiday, if your collection day falls on or after the holiday, your collection will be delayed one day. (Friday collections will be picked up on Saturday.) Your collection day will then return to its normally scheduled day the following week.
  • Cuyahoga County - Two local farms will take the trees. Many cities collect the trees from curbside. In all cases remove all ornaments, tnsel, lights, etc. You can also Recycle Old Holiday Lights, Until January 15, the Solid Waste District collects broken, burned out or tangled strings of holiday lights for recycling. Drop unwanted light strings, power cords and power strips in a marked box in our lobby at 4750 East 131 Street in Garfield Heights. Hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm. Some city service departments also collect lights from residents as a part of this program. Check with your community . Sorry, we cannot accept pre-lit trees or garland. Lights must be removed from the item for proper recycling.

All holiday decorations (tinsel, garland, wires, nails, stands) must be removed in order for the tree to be collected. No artificial trees, flocked trees, or trees in plastic bags will be collected.

    Highland Heights (440) 461-2440. Curbside collection by city for composting. If the city is in the middle of
    a snow storm and unable to respond, the rubbish contractor (Kimble) will pick up the trees. If the trees are picked up by Kimble, they will not be recycled.
    Highland Hills (216) 662-5012. Curbside collection of Christmas trees for composting.
    Hunting Valley (440) 247-6106. No collection. Put the tree in wooded area for decomposition.
    Independence (216) 524-9191. Curbside collection by city on regular trash day. Chips all trees for city compost pile.
    Lakewood (216) 252-4322. Curbside collection by city beginning December 26. Chips all trees for mulch.
    Mayfield Village (440) 442-5506. Residents should drop their trees off at the Service Department for recycling.
    North Olmsted (440) 716-4151. Republic will pick up Christmas trees the first two weeks of January on your regular scheduled pick day.
    Olmsted Falls (440) 235-1345. Republic Waste will collect trees the first 2 weeks of January.
    Olmsted Township (440) 235-1011. Republic Waste to collect as yard waste in the month of January. Township will chip them as part of brush program beginning in April.
    Parma (216) 661-7375. Pick up will be January 4-17. After those dates Parma residents can put their trees out for Bulk Pick-Up week.
    Parma Heights (440) 884-9607. Republic Waste will provide curbside collection of trees on January 7 & January 14 only for composting. Trees should NOT be placed in bags and ornaments should be removed. No artificial trees accepted.
    Shaker Heights (216) 491-3282. Curbside collection by city for composting. Remove all lights and stands.
    South Euclid (216) 381-0402. Curbside collection by city from January 1-31. Chips trees for mulch.
    University Heights (216) 932-7800. Collected curbside on rubbish day, comingled with collected brush and
    composted by others. Remove all lights, ornaments, and plastic bags.

  • Dublin, Ohio - The City of Dublin makes it easy for you to get rid of those real trees with our curbside pickup and residential yard waste composting program. Collection will take place each Monday in January. Please remove all decorations and Put the trees at the curb, free of any wrapping or bags, by 7 am on Mondays. If a tree is larger than 8 feet in length, cut it in half before placing it at the curb. Christmas trees can also be composted at home or used in the back yard in a variety of ways. The branches can be cut and used to cover perennial gardens, acting as extra protection from the cold weather.   • Greene County - There is a year-round drop-off facility for residents' yard waste at 2145 Greene Way Blvd., Xenia, OH. Last reported hours were open Monday through Thursday and Saturday, and accept whole trees.     Addyston -During the month of January, residents of Addyston, Cleves, Miami Township, and North Bend can drop off Christmas trees at the Maintenance Building, 20 Cooper Avenue, Cleves, Ohio 45002.

    Cleves - During the month of January, residents of Addyston, Cleves, Miami Township, and North Bend can drop off Christmas trees at the Miami Township Maintenance Building, 20 Cooper Avenue, Cleves, Ohio 45002.

    Colerain Township - The Township offers Christmas tree chipping from December 26th to mid-January at Colerain Township Administration Building, 4200 - 4300 Springdale Road
    Residents may also use one of the free yard trimmings drop-off sites that the Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District sponsors; one of which is located in Colerain Township.

    Columbia Township, Ohio - For the first six Mondays immediately following Christmas, the Maintenance Crew will collect real Christmas trees placed at curbside. All stands, ornaments, nails, wires, disposal bags another materials must be removed. Please be careful not to block traffic or driveways. All trees collected will be recycled into mulch and made available to Township residents.

    Delhi Township - TThe township provides chipping of Christmas trees each year (during the first 2 weeks in January - call for dates) at Floral Paradise Gardens (461 Greenwell) from dawn to dusk.
    Residents may also use the free Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District sponsored yard trimmings drop-off sites.

    Evendale - The Service Department regularly picks up tree trimmings and other items not taken by Republic, including Christmas trees. Residents must comply with the guidelines. Chips are available to residents.

    Fairfax - The Maintenance Department will pick up Christmas trees through the end of January. Trees will be picked up Monday to Friday. For more information, call 513-527-6505.
    Forest Park - Christmas tree drop-off from December 26 through the second Sunday in January. Leave them at Kemper Meadow Park, 1280 West Kemper Rd. Place the tree on the grass by the curb on the south side of the park's parking lot.
    (the side closest to West Kemper Road). point the trunks towards the parking lot curb and the top of the tree pointing towards West Kemper Road. The trees will then be chipped that Monday and reused as ground covering in the spring. Residents may also use the Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District's yard trimmings drop-off sites.     Golf Manor - The Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District encourages residents to utilize the District sponsored yard trimmings drop-off sites for Christmas trees. For more information, call 513-531-7491.

    Harrison - The City of Harrison Service Department collects Christmas trees during the month of January. For more information, call 513-367-3728.
    Indian Hill - The Village Service Department will operate a Christmas tree drop off site at Stephan Field from December 26 to mid-February. Residents may drop off their trees in the designated area adjacent to the main parking lot off of Drake Road. Please be sure to remove the plastic bags, tinsel, lights, etc. from the trees prior to drop off. Curbside collection of Christmas trees may also be arranged by calling the Service Department at 513-831-3712.
    Lockland - Lockland also picks up tree limbs/Christmas Trees.

    Loveland - The City of Loveland makes it easy for you to get rid of those real trees with our curbside pickup. Collection takes place annually from January 2 to January 23. Please remove all decorations and place Christmas trees at the curb. For more information, call 513-707-1442..
    Madeira - Christmas tree chipping begins December 26 and runs through January 31.. The drop-off location is McDonald Commons, Dawson Road.

    Norwood - Rumpke will collect Christmas trees at the curb on the regular day of garbage pickup during the first two weeks in January. Norwood Public Works will also be collecting leaves at the curb. You may rake them into the street where they will be vacuumed as time allows or place them in yardwaste bags.     Reading - Christmas trees are collected by City crews the first few weeks after Christmas.

    Springdale - Christmas trees may be placed at the curb similar to the chipper program and trees will be picked up with the regular chipper program and be disposed of through our mulch program. Please remove all decorations and lights and DO NOT place the tree in a bag unless you intend for Rumpke to pick it up.     Springfield Township - To compost your yard trimmings, including Christmas trees, visit the Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District sponsored yard trimmings drop-off sites.

  • Hancock County - Christmas Tree Recycling - Drop off live Christmas Trees from December 26 to mid-January at either of the locations below. Please remove all decorations, ornaments and tinsel before dropping off your tree.

  • Mahoning County - Trees will be collected at the following sites and reused as natural fish habitat at area lakes. Please remove all decorations!   • Medina County - Many cities and towns have curbside pickup, but any county resident can take trees to the Medina County Central Processing Facility, 8700 Lake Road, Westfield Township, from 6 am to 4:30 pm weekdays or 7 am to noon Saturdays.
  • Monroe County - Christmas Tree Chipping Program for County residents from December 26th through January 17th. All tinsel and decorations must be removed from tree prior to chipping.   • Montgomery County - Residents to bring their trees to its Moraine (1001 Encrete Lane) or Vandalia (6589 Old Webster St.) transfer stations on Mondays through Saturdays, where the trees will be collected by a contractor for mulching.
  • Oxford, OH - The City of Oxford offers Christmas tree recycling annually from mid-December through mid-January. View our Events Calendar for exact dates. Remove all decorations from the tree prior to setting the tree at the curbside. This holiday pick up service does not include wreaths or garland. Oxford residents may place live Christmas trees at the curbside for disposal on regularly scheduled refuse collection days. Yard waste tags are not required for this service.   • Parma, Ohio - Christmas trees should be placed on the tree lawn on your regular trash day during the first two weeks of January.
    Trees cannot be in a bag and tinsel needs to be removed. If a tree is placed inside a bag, it will not be collected.
  • Portage County
    Aurora: Leave undecorated trees at curb on regular trash days.
    Garrettsville: Leave undecorated trees on the tree lawn during January.
    Hiram: Leave undecorated trees by the roadside during January.
    Kent: Leave undecorated trees at curb late January (call them for this year's dates). Kent residents can drop off trees at the yard-waste transfer site on Plum Street any time.
    Mantua: Leave undecorated trees at curb in January. Trees over 4 feet should be cut in half.
    Ravenna: Leave undecorated trees at curb through January.
    Streetsboro: Leave undecorated trees at curb for pickup during the first 10 days of January.
  • Stark County - Residents should contact their waste haulers for instructions. For more information, call the Stark-Tuscarawas-Wayne Joint Solid Waste Management District at 800-678-9839.
  • Summit County - Metro Parks will recycle Christmas trees through January 31. Trees, cleaned of all decorations and tinsel, may be dropped off at five locations below, For more information, call 330-865-8065. For curbside pickups in manytowns, see this page.
  • Toledo Area - Drop off locations are open on weekdays through January 16. Signs will be posted at each of the following Toledo city sites identifying the park as a drop-off location:
