What Is a Hazardous Waste Generator Identification Number?
An EPA hazardous waste generator identification number is a unique number that is assigned to facilities that generate specified amounts of hazardous waste. The 12-character number is used by states and EPA to track hazardous waste activities.
Do I Need a Generator Identification Number?
If you generate more than 220 lbs (100 kg) of hazardous waste or 2.2 lbs (1 kg) of acutely hazardous waste in any calendar month, you will need to obtain an EPA identification number. Also, if you accumulate more than 2200 lbs (1000 kg) of hazardous waste at any one time, you will need an EPA identification number. Some States also require generators of less than 220 pounds of hazardous waste to have identification numbers.
In addition to generators, companies that transport hazardous waste and facilities that store, treat, or dispose of regulated quantities of hazardous waste generated by facilities must also have EPA identification numbers.
How Do I Obtain a Generator Identification Number?
Call or write your State hazardous waste management agency or EPA regional office and ask for a copy of EPA Form 8700-12 "Notification of Regulated Waste Activity." You will be sent a booklet containing the two-page form and instructions for filling it out. A few States use a form that is different from the EPA form. If you contact your State first, you will be sent the appropriate form to complete.
Complete one copy of the form for each facility that generates or handles hazardous waste. There is no fee associated with filling out this form. Each site or location will receive its own unique EPA identification number. You must use this identification number on all hazardous waste shipping forms.
Make sure you fill the form out completely and correctly and sign the certification. Send the form to the address listed in the booklet.
If you move your facility to another location, you must notify EPA or the State of the new location, submit a new form, and obtain a new EPA identification number. If hazardous waste was previously handled at the new location, and it already has an EPA identification number, you will be assigned that number for your relocated facility.
