President Clinton Names W. Michael McCabe as Deputy Administrator at the EPA

November 16, 1999 - The President today announced his intent to nominate W. Michael McCabe as Deputy Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Mr. W. Michael McCabe, of Chaddsford, Pennsylvania, serves as the Regional Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Middle Atlantic Region. In cooperation with Governors and senior state officials, Mr. McCabe leads the implementation of federal environmental programs in the Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. From 1987 to 1995, Mr. McCabe was on Senator Joe Biden's staff (D-DE). Mr. McCabe was Senator Biden's Communications and Projects Director serving as senior advisor on Delaware issues, ensuring the state's people and communities an effective government response. From 1981 to 1985, Mr. McCabe served as Staff Director of the U.S. House of Representatives Energy Conservation and Power Subcommittee and from 1976 to 1979, he served as Staff Director of the bipartisan Congressional Environmental and Energy Study Conference. In 1980, Mr. McCabe organized and directed the national commemoration of the tenth anniversary of Earth Day. From 1974 to 1976, Mr. McCabe served as legislative assistant to former Senator Gary Hart (D-CO) where he specialized in environmental and energy policy, including the promotion of conservation and renewable energy as alternative to fossil fuels.

Mr. McCabe received a B.A. from Duke University.

The Deputy Administrator for the EPA works with the Administrator to provide Agency leadership and is the Acting Administrator in the Administrator's absence. And an assistant administrator is a logical candidate to replace the administrator when political winds change or the current one retires.
